Brew Review - Toxic Brew Company - Dayton, Ohio

Toxically refreshing (I'm getting good at these slogans)

Toxic Brew Company sits in a seedy little area of downtown Dayton called the Oregon District.  It is an up and coming area that has been gentrified from being an adult video and peep show lined street, to an area filled with trendy restaurants and boutique shops.  This has become a trendy approach to upgrading old industrial areas that fell on hard times and became hot beds of smut and icky activity to something that evolves into a place with tons of character.

Brew Review - The Dayton Beer Company - Dayton, Ohio

Tiny brewery, big taste (I should work for Budweiser marketing....)

I was in Dayton this past week and headed out to some Beer Advocate recommendations in the evening.  Dayton has a pretty decent, growing beer scene.  The Dayton Beer Company looks like it used to be an old convenient store converted to a bar.  In fact it sits in a mini-mall right next to a Super K.  Don't let the appearance distract you as they pump out some great beer.

Gig Poster Thursday - Pitchfork Music Festival 2012

Artists: Johnny Sampson (art) and Mike Renaud (placed type)

I haven't posted a Gig Poster Thursday post for about 3 weeks, so I figured what better way to return than with one of my favorite posters.  This is from Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago's Union Park in 2012.  Pitchfork is the smaller Coachella of the Midwest with it's indie lineup and hipster setup.  Its a pretty cool festival that's spread across baseball fields and has an awesome poster alley.

Lollapalooza lineup revealed....and....there's always next year.

Underwhelming headliners cap off a less than spectacular lineup this year

I posted a review a few days ago of the Chicago Tribune leaked headliners Eminem, Skrillex, Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys.  In that 'fake' review I expressed my distaste with the rumored bands and stated if these were the true headliners that this year's lineup would be the worst in recent year's remembered.  Well, unfortunately those rumors became a reality this morning as Lollapalooza release the 2014 lineup with those exact acts headlining.

After holding the sale of 3-day passes before the lineup was even released and selling out in less than an hour, I started to feel something was up.  Even though Lollapalooza has become more of a 'I have to be there' event rather than being a 'I have to be there for this lineup' festival, the decision was a bit off-putting.  Lollapalooza made the decision to probably play it safe and sell out before the people purchasing passes had the choice to digest the lack of content.   After the lineup was released this morning, single day tickets still sold out so maybe my assumption is wrong about Perry Farrell and the Lolla organizers, but it still doesn't sit right.  They went for the cash grab instead of creating a diverse lineup and being confident that their lineup would be better than other festivals this year.  They weren't confident because it is not even close to being in the top 3-4 festivals this summer.

With an EDM and hip-hop heavy lineup, Lolla changed its approach a bit and went away from the 'Lolla' basics which is: have the backpack hip-hop, have the electronic dance, have the DJs, have the one-hit wonders....but don't forget about the rock.  Rock is the cornerstone of Lolla.  I don't care if taste is changing with early 20s kids, this festival was created on rock and has lived on rock.  Regardless if it is indie rock, blues rock or even pop rock there still needs to be heavy rock.

Let's take a look at where Lolla went wrong by day....

Vampire Weekend performs 'Unbelievers' on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night

The boys continue their relentless promotion of last year's 'Modern Vampires of the City'

Vampire Weekend has been touring and promoting since May 2013 when 'Modern Vampires of the City' was released and they have slowed down a bit.  Although, Ezra Koenig's fashion sense may have reached a new low with their most recent performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night.

Vampire played 'Unbelievers', the latest single of their almost one year old album last night.  I have always felt 'Unbelievers' has been the third best track off of 'Modern', behind 'Diane Young' and 'Ya Hey'.  Ezra's voice was a little shaky to start the performance, maybe due to the fact that The Terminator was on the show earlier.  He smoothed out though and the rest of the crew picked up him up nicely.

The Black Keys release new single 'Fever'

Along with details of the new album 'Turn Blue'

FINALLY.  After almost three years, The Black Keys released their first single, 'Fever' off of their new album 'Turn Blue' today.  'Fever' picks up right where 'El Camino' left off three years ago with a beat that will be conducive to making arenas across the world bob their heads.  It is evident that Dan and Pat took producing instruction from Danger Mouse on the song as it sounds as it fits perfectly into the songs off of their last three hit records, Attack & Release, Brothers and 'Camino.  Dan Auerbach's smooth voice glides over the perfectly engineered beats from Danger Mouse and the tag-a-long percussion from Patrick Carney.  Let's hope the rest of the album can hold a candle to the initial single.  Watch the official video for 'Fever' here:

Lollapalooza lineup and ticket sales date announced - Tuesday, March 25th.....Plus, rumors!!!

Let the excitement begin....

After having about a month to recover from the excitement of Bonnaroo's lineup release extravaganza, B.L.A.M., in comes Lollapalooza to keep my festy juices pumping.   It was announced Thursday on Lollapalooza's website, the lineup will be released and tickets will be on sale Tuesday, March 25th.  Tickets will be up for purchase at 11am EST/10am CST and if I remember from previous years, the lineup will either be announced early that morning or on Monday.  I'm betting on them announcing Monday night to keep with the latest trend of making an event of the lineup release this year.

Lollapalooza is doing something new this year and is having a lottery for fans to enter and win two passes.  If you go to lucky.lollapalooza.com you can register to get 5 lucky lottery ball numbers.  On Monday night at 8pm EST they will announce the winners.

Rumors have been a buzz this past week also with the Chicago Tribune leaking potential headliners.  The Tribune stated from unnamed sources in the music industry that Eminem, Kings of Leon, Skrillex and Arctic Monkeys will be headlining.  If this is the case, it will be one of the worst headlining lineups in memory.  Let me rant a bit about each band....
