Lollapalooza lineup and ticket sales date announced - Tuesday, March 25th.....Plus, rumors!!!

Let the excitement begin....

After having about a month to recover from the excitement of Bonnaroo's lineup release extravaganza, B.L.A.M., in comes Lollapalooza to keep my festy juices pumping.   It was announced Thursday on Lollapalooza's website, the lineup will be released and tickets will be on sale Tuesday, March 25th.  Tickets will be up for purchase at 11am EST/10am CST and if I remember from previous years, the lineup will either be announced early that morning or on Monday.  I'm betting on them announcing Monday night to keep with the latest trend of making an event of the lineup release this year.

Lollapalooza is doing something new this year and is having a lottery for fans to enter and win two passes.  If you go to lucky.lollapalooza.com you can register to get 5 lucky lottery ball numbers.  On Monday night at 8pm EST they will announce the winners.

Rumors have been a buzz this past week also with the Chicago Tribune leaking potential headliners.  The Tribune stated from unnamed sources in the music industry that Eminem, Kings of Leon, Skrillex and Arctic Monkeys will be headlining.  If this is the case, it will be one of the worst headlining lineups in memory.  Let me rant a bit about each band....

Kings of Leon

I love Kings of Leon.  I do not see any issue with them placed into the headliner pool.  It makes sense too as they came out with their latest album Mechanical Bull at the end of last year and have been touring heavy the last several months.  I was actually surprised that they haven't popped into other big festival lineups up to this summer yet.  They are actually in my top 3 bands/artists of potentially headlining....the others The Black Keys and Jack White....oh god, please let it happen.

Eminem

Dude, really?  How does Eminem seriously fit into a Lollapalooza lineup that has largely become rock and hipster indie?  Even the hip-hop that Lolla has brought in over the last several years has been backpack hip-hop (Earl Sweatshirt, A$AP Rocky, etc.).  I may be giving this a hard wrap because I'm not a huge rap fan, but this doesn't make sense to me especially since they had him 3 years ago.  I get Eminem can pack a stadium on his own, but this doesn't feel right to me.

Skrillex

The EDM "fad" has been around for some time now so it appears that its no much a fad anymore.  Grabbing EDM's biggest name is completely fine with me, but not to headline.  This spot is a huge disappoint and waste to me unless he is opposite someone else that holds the weight of Jack White or some other big rock name, but more to that in a sec.

Arctic Monkeys

I saw Arctic Monkeys open up for The Black Keys on their El Camino tour in Chicago at the United Center back in 2012.  They were good, but not great.  I even liked them a ton before I saw them live.  They just overplayed in the arena setting.  Everything was over modulated and muffled.  Plus, I just don't think they are headliners for THE music festival.  Maybe a smaller fest, but they are 4th or 5th billing at Coachella this year even.  This has to be a smoke screen.

So if you haven't determined it yet, I'm not a huge fan of these rumored headliners.  I can't even think of the combos of these bands of who would play at the same time.  Skrillex and Eminem won't play on the same night on opposite stage as the they probably have similar fan bases.  Neither will Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys.  That leaves Kings of Leon with Skrillex opposite and maybe Eminem and Arctic Monkeys the same night.  That would suck for me because I'm not big on either.  Unless they throw another great old school band like they did with The Postal Service playing opposite Mumford and Sons last year, these headliners could be rough.  Lolla is all about the whole lineup though and if there are 10-15 bands that I can truly say I love I'll be satisfied.  They have always done a great job of creating the best experience for everyone, so let's hope for the best!

  1. You are correct. These headliners are very weak. But maybe the next two will be better? They almost have to be!
